Pet Surgery
Medical emergencies happen just as often in pets as they do in humans. Many issues can pop up that may require surgical treatment. Sometimes the issue is urgent, while other surgeries are scheduled in advance.
Spaying & Neutering
Two of the most common surgical procedures that veterinarians perform are spays and neuters. This is a very minor surgery, but also one of the most important decisions pet owners can make when it comes to the health of their pets. Spaying involves removing the uterus and ovaries of a female. This can help prevent both breast cancer and uterine infections. Neutering is for male pets and is the removal of the testicles. This helps to improve behavior and eliminates the risk of testicular cancer.
Dental Surgery
Animals may require dental surgery just like humans do if they have a tooth infection or decay. If they have severe enough damage, a vet may suggest an extraction to help with the preservation of the jawbone and gum tissue. Pets may develop broken teeth and roots, abscesses, cysts, tumors, broken jaws, and even misalignment of their teeth. Some of these cases may require a vet to perform surgery.
Cataract Surgery & Internal Surgery
Many older dogs develop cataracts that are caused by diabetes, infection, or trauma. Eyes with cataracts will have a foggy appearance. The vet will remove the foggy lens and replace it with an artificial lens during the surgery.
There are also times when dogs or cats will eat something that they are not supposed to. Internal surgery may be required if your pet swallows a foreign object. This is one of the most common emergency surgeries performed on pets. Internal surgery is also performed to remove both bladder stones and tumors. Soft tissue surgery may also be performed to remove tumors in both dogs and cats if they have a cancerous mass.
